After a long discussion about the best time to start playtesting with a former Ubisoft colleague, I decided to post a previous Linkedin post regarding the topic. I recently come across an old video of MGMT’s first live performance from 2003 and it got me thinking. If you haven’t seen it, here is the link :

It’s raw, goofy, and probably not ready for public consumption by today’s standards. But what stood out was how genuine it was: just two friends having fun and sharing their vision, with everything that makes MGMT MGMT already there.

Fast forward 7 years to Glastonbury:

The same band, performing the same songs, now has thousands of fans screaming their lyrics. Kids, which Pitchfork once called “an inspirational dance anthem for playgrounders,” had become one of the biggest international hits of the early 2000s and the album 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 is part of Rolling Stone 500 best record of all time.

It made me reflect on how many clients I’ve worked with refuse to showcase anything from their game or project until it’s “perfectly viewable” or “playable.” They worry it’s not ready for players or users.

But here’s the kicker: 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮.

The truth is, you don’t need to be "Glastonready" to start finding your fans. Instead, start by finding your special crowd early, your listeners, viewers, users, players. The people who resonate with what you’re creating, even if the project is still rough around the edges. These are the ones who will not only support you but also help shape your work into something truly impactful. With their feedback and enthusiasm, you might reach “Glastonready” status far sooner than you’d expect. (𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘐’𝘮 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.)

So, 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭. Share what you’ve got. Start the conversation.

You might just find the crowd that takes your work to the next level... Originally posted here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7269976337430290433/
